How To Make Banking Easy (And Free)

Is money the root of all evil or do you just need a better bank set-up? I would wager the latter and with the help of Chime want to make it finances easy!
This post was sponsored by Chime as part of an Activation for Influence Central. I received complimentary products to facilitate my review but all opinions expressed are my own.

I’m not sure that “banking” and easy actually go together like peanut butter and jelly (or honey–whatever your preference). Or at least they didn’t until now.

    Old Banking Ways

I still remember opening my first account. It was with First Union Bank and my mom took me to open it after getting my first job as a lifeguard when I was 15. I thought it was SO cool! I had an ATM card, an account register and my account numbers. I was ready to tackle banking head on!

Until reality hit that it wasn’t as easy as I thought.

    Keeping Banks In Business

I am pretty sure that my accounts alone kept Wachovia in business while I was in college. It was so hard for me to keep track of my expenses! This was pre-mobile banking so I actually had to go to an ATM machine to see my balance. This was on the brink of online banking so I learned I could check my statement that way but ugh, it was never QUITE accurate and I was ALWAYS in the negative! I remember one time my parents putting rent money in my account and I had to tell them that it was already overdrawn by $300. holds head down in shame

    I know. Terrible.

Is money the root of all evil or do you just need a better bank set-up? I would wager the latter and with the help of Chime want to make it finances easy!

Real-life screenshots from my phone of my notifications I get. I LOVE the “Hey boo!” Haaa!

    Banking Made Easy

Thank goodness for evolution guys!!! Whereas in the beginning of MY banking, we didn’t have things like mobile banking, this is now a standard. While I love a traditional bank, this new style of online-only banking has made it’s way into my heart. I’ve recently tried out Chime Bank and I’m never going back!

Is money the root of all evil or do you just need a better bank set-up? I would wager the latter and with the help of Chime want to make it finances easy!

    Chime Bank

So what is Chime, right? Chime is the bank that everyone has been looking for. I’ve been a customer with them for a couple weeks now and I’m in love. Seriously. So much so that I had my husband take a look and he immediately wanted to sign up–I made him wait so I could show you guys just how easy it is to sign up.

    Why Chime?

Chime is an online bank that has no monthly fees that surprise you and send your balance out of wack. It also has no overdraft charges. Yes, you read that right. For someone who spent their college career paying people’s salaries with my overdraft charges, this right here is a favorite for me. How do you get cash? There are over 24,000 fee free ATM’s. FEE.FREE. Yes, you read that right again.

Is money the root of all evil or do you just need a better bank set-up? I would wager the latter and with the help of Chime want to make it finances easy!

    My Favorite Features

They seriously had me at fee-free and easy set up. But there’s more:

    • Automatic savings: swipe your debit card and the charge will be rounded up to the nearest dollar with the difference put into your savings account + they give you 10% of each of your weekly savings to help you save faster
    • Cash back for paying bills and making purchases
    • No unnecessary fees (aka the things we hate about banks)
    • Real-time transaction alerts (I forgot my PIN and it alerted me literally right after I put the PIN in wrong)
    • Morning balance alerts
    • Easy to set up Direct Deposit
    • Took less than 5min to get started

Is money the root of all evil or do you just need a better bank set-up? I would wager the latter and with the help of Chime want to make it finances easy!

Banking Made Easier = Life Made Easier

I’m a millennial mom who has her hands in literally EVERYTHING. From being a budding entrepreneur, managing 2 kids, a house, and being a wife, I don’t have time to balance checkbooks and wonder about my transactions. Having my real-time transaction alerts plus morning balance notifications makes my life so.much.easier.

Tell me the truth: What is one thing you could change about banking?

Sewing 101: So You Want To Learn To Sew

Being able to sew is a pretty cool skill to have. Want to learn to sew? Check out this first installment in my "Learn to Sew" series and get started!

Growing up I had busy hands. My mom used to say that they were into everything as I was learning how to create by destroying. Oxymoronic, right? After I disassembled my daybed and then put together a mini version of the human body, my mom decided that it was time to make use of all this busyness that my hands were into. At 13, she enrolled me in my first {and only} sewing class where I learned the very basics.

Not my best creation. But it was a start!

I didn’t like it. It was too tedious. There were details I didn’t feel like being bothered with and at the end of the class all I got was some stupid drawstring bag that I hated. Sewing was a bust for me until my first marriage started to unravel. Looking for something constructive, my mom again sent me a sewing machine. I made a NYE dress that made me feel amazing {though looking back now it was horrible… see?} but I still wasn’t quite hooked.

After I had mini I finally re-set my sewing machine up and was immediately overwhelmed because I literally had no idea what I was doing. So I say all that to say that I’m a self-taught seamstress. Everything that I’ve learned I have read and tried out on my own. People look at the things I create and are in awe thinking that it’s something that they can’t do when they really can!

Sew let’s get started!!!! (See what I did there? Ha!!!)

I Want To Learn To Sew!

Being able to sew is a pretty cool skill to have. Want to learn to sew? Check out this first installment in my "Learn to Sew" series and get started!

    Sewing Machines

There are like a million and one sewing machines on the market and they’ve come a looooooong way from when I started! Some of the more popular brands of sewing machines are Singer, Brother, and Janome. I’ve never used a Janome so I don’t have much to say about them.

Singer and Brother are pretty comparable in my book. I’ve owned both of them. I’ve had 2 Singers and am currently loving my Brother. Which one do I have? I have the Brother Project Runway Edition pictured here:

    I love this sewing machine!!!

Living in Atlanta I chose this machine because there are quite a few authorized Brother’s technicians which is comforting for me. I definitely recommend this machine–it’s easy to use, easy to troubleshoot, and requires little maintenance.

My current set up. A little messy but I’m giving you guys the real deal!

What to Look For in a Machine

When buying a sewing machine it can get overwhelming with all the features. Here some of the things you’re looking for:

    computerized (most are nowadays)
    50+ stitches
    drop feed
    automatic needle threading
    drop-in bobbin
    one-step, auto-size buttonholes

These things make life way more easy when sewing!

I’ve got a sewing machine, now what?

    Learn the Language

The next thing you’re going to want to do is familiarize yourself with sewing terms. Just like any profession, we’ve got acronyms and crazy words we like to drop as if everyone knows them. Check out this great resource for all the words you’ll need to know over at Make It & Love It until I come up with my own.

    Get the Tools

So we’ve all seen those handy, dandy sewing kits as you browse whatever your favorite craft store is and while those make it seem easy to get everything you need in one cute package, that’s not going to work! Here are the things I suggest you have on hand as you start your love of sewing:

2 pairs of shears (1 Pinking, 1 regular)
1 pair of scissors (for pattern cutting)
1 bobbin threader (you don’t want to mess up your motor on your sewing machine)
    extra bobbins
thread (I recommend just having a bunch of black and white on hand for now)
    magnetic pin holder

sewing pins (these are my favorite)
    scissor sharpener
small pair of scissors to cut thread
self-healing mat& rotary cutter (this is the set I have)
interfacing (I feel like this is just something that most patterns call for so it’s easier to just keep it on hand!)

    Spinach & Tomato Quiche

Here is our beloved quiche recipe. This is mini's absolute favorite food and she's informed everyone from day care to kindergarten about it!

Ever since she was born, mini has been an eater. She’s always taken great joy in the art of eating. I can still see her little face smeared happily with prunes, yes, prunes. In addition to always being a big eater, she’s also had quite the developed pallet. I remember one rather embarrassing time where I didn’t have a sitter and brought her to dinner with some of my girlfriends. She fit right in eating mussels and dipping her bread in the tomato sauce. But her all time favorite food is quiche.

    Quiche - Ingredients

It never fails that when the hubs and I go to visit her at school, something has been written about her love of quiche–specifically quiche with spinach in it. Bougie, right? Quiche - Ready to Bake

The funny thing is that my best sisterfriend and I used to make quiche for the girls because it was cheap. To feed a family of 4 it would cost us under $10 and there would be leftovers. This was before mini’s appetite turned even more Hulk-like. Now? She would eat the entire pie if I let her.

    Quiche - Finished 2

One of my favorite things about quiche is how quick, easy, and customizable it is. As mini pointed out the other day, you can have quiche at any time of the day depending upon what seasonings you use and other ingredients you add. A couple weeks ago I used a can of Trader Joe’s crab meat to make her quiche and it was an even bigger hit. Some of our favorite combinations are:

    • crab, onions, and Italian Cheese mix
    • mushrooms, onions, spinach, Gouda
    • tomato, spinach, onions, feta
    • turkey sausage, onions, cheddar
    • shrimp, garlic, Italian cheese mix

    Quiche - 1 Slice

We make quiche a lot. Like a lot a lot. And anytime I do, it’s accompanied by shouts of “I love you mommy!!!!” “You’re the best mommy/cook in the world!!!!” There’s nothing like a bit of affirmation right?

    Quiche - Fork & Piece

Quiche - ABC biteQuiche - Mini Bite

    Quiche - All Gone

Well, without further adieu, here is our recipe for quiche:

Make A Back To School Command Center Under $20

Make this school year a success by creating a command center that will make organization seamless and pretty all for under $20!

Let’s be real here, I’m a planner and organization junkie. Anything that makes my life easier and less chaotic is something that I’m here for–especially as it pertains to back to school. I’ve been pretty honest about my struggles through kindergarten last year and I’m determined to make my planner addiction a strength for first grade.

And you know what? Target has my back.

I snagged some of these babies a couple of weeks ago to help me organize my office. Not only do I just hate having clutter on my desk, I really can’t afford the space so an easy hanging solution was something that I was 100% here for. I used push pins to hang these and we were up and ready to go in 5 min.

Make this school year a success by creating a command center that will make organization seamless and pretty all for under $20!

After I went school shopping for mini, I knew that I would need something to help me keep it together. Being a #mamamogul + matriarch of the family + chef + chauffer + everything = my mind in a tizzy. I’m a visual person so I need to keep the important things in a place that I would see them. So after talking to mini, we decided that the best place for the command center would be right by the front door. It’s where she essentially comes in and dumps her stuff so that works.

Make this school year a success by creating a command center that will make organization seamless and pretty all for under $20!

    Essentials For the Command Center

I knew I needed a calendar, place to take notes, place to sign things, and a place to stick reminders and other papers. Target’s Dollar Section had all of these things that I needed so it made it super easy:

    Chalkboard – $3
    Cork Board – $3
    White Board Calendar – $3
    Clipboard – $3
    File Folders – $1
File Folder Holder – $2 (from Walmart)

Make this school year a success by creating a command center that will make organization seamless and pretty all for under $20!

**Note: These links are NOT the ones that I bought specifically BUT they are similar to what I did buy and will make a good substitute if you can’t find the ones I got.

    Putting It All Together

Again, I’m lazy so I used push pins to put this all together. It was pretty easy and only took about 10 min but I’m loving how it looks! I used some yarn that I had around to tie chalk markers, dry erase markers and my pen so they hang near where they’ll be used. I’m excited to see how this will help keep our year organized!

How do you plan on staying organized this year?

Summertime is the equivalent of the season of cook-outs and BBQ’s to me. Driving through the neighborhood all I smell is smokey goodness being grilled on decks that have been waiting to be using all wintertime. We all know that BBQ’s are potlucks and I’ve made it to the top of multiple BBQ invite lists because of my contribution to the food spread: an adult-only fruit salad and bottle of wine. But not just any wine–a deliciously crisp and sweet Moscato that proves to be the perfect compliment to the savory flavors waiting to be indulged.

    Sutter Home Moscato

Sutter Home was the first wine that I can remember drinking when I turned 21. I’m a summer baby (yes, my birthday is right around the corner!) so naturally I tried one of their white wines. With the cold weather, I remember scoffing at the bold flavors the red wines brought. I love a light, sweet wine–nothing with too strong of a flavor, especially for the hot weathers. This is why when I saw the new Moscato blends that Sutter Home has recently introduced as I was browsing the aisles at Walmart I was really excited! All my friends and I are wine lovers. Girls nights in or out, Sutter Home is the perfect addition.

They’ve recently come out with the following:

    -Moscato/Riesling Blend
    -Moscato/Chardonnay
    -Blend Moscato
    -Pink Moscato
    -Red Moscato

I’ve tried the Pink Moscato which is definitely a fan favorite around here. I cannot wait to try out the Moscato/Riesling Blend, a combination of my 2 favorites. These can be found at Walmart, Ingles, Winco, and most independent liquor/convenience stores.

Which one of these are you excited to try?

Creating Comfort Daily with TAZO® Tea

“This post was sponsored by Starbucks as part of an Influencer Activation. I received compensation and complimentary products to facilitate my review.”

Sipping the comfort of the sweet and spicy deliciousness that is Chai tea has been made easy by TAZO® with the Chai Latte K-Cup® pods.

It’s 10:45pm and I’ve just fallen asleep after running on about 10 hours of sleep within 3 days. Happy to finally be in the bed at a decent hour, I slowly drift off to sleep only to be awakened 10 minutes later by a screaming abc. Disoriented is an understatement for that moment. Abc walked into my room screaming and I felt like I was being tortured. I was reaching my arms out for her to come to me and she was standing there screaming for me to come to her. It was a standoff. Neither of us won since Daddy swooped in and saved us both. Well, almost both.

I’m one of those sleepers that sleeps hard until they’re woken up and then I can’t go back to sleep which is why I’m so dependent on my morning cup of caffeine. I’m the perfect blend of my parents’ vices of coffee and tea–I have a love affair with them both. I love the comfort that a warm cup of either coffee or tea provides first thing in the morning. As does my husband. In fact, when we first started dating, I would bring him cups of his favorite chai tea to work.

Now that I work from home and he works in the office, I make him at home tea instead.

Sipping the comfort of the sweet and spicy deliciousness that is Chai tea has been made easy by TAZO® with the Chai Latte K-Cup® pods.

Sharing Comfort with TAZO® Chai Latte

TAZO® Chai Latte K-Cup® pods makes it easy and convenient for us to continue to experience these moments of comfort together. We have a single serve Keurig®–it makes it way easier to regulate how much caffeine I consume–that gives us everything we need. Parenting is a tough job but it’s easier when parents function as a unit. We use the time that it takes for us to make our cups of tea to go over the current day, highlight any “Reminders” and just connect with each other. After marriage, so many people forget to do the things that they did to get them married. Sharing smiles and giggles over cups of tea has always been something that keeps us connected.

When the hubs and I first started dating, I found out his favorite tea was Chai and I would bring him cups. Now that I work from home, we still catch up over tea. #ChaiLatte #KCup #IC #ad

Sweet & Spicy: The Perfect Blend

The TAZO® Chai Latte K-Cup® pods has made it so easy to bring the coffeehouse home and really gets the flavor balance right–down to the froth on the top. When the scent of the tea hits you, it’s perfection. There are bold notes of cardamom sweetened by the likes of sugar and milk that leave you feeling balanced, ready to tackle your day. The mixture of the sweet and spicy flavors is almost representative of he and I in our marriage. I won’t lie and say I’m the sweet since I’m definitely the spicy but like the TAZO® Chai Latte, we’re the perfect blend.

    New to Chai?

Chai tea is a black tea that is a balance of sweet and spicy flavors that has a deep rooted history in India. It’s made with the following delicious flavors:

    • Sweet Cinnamon
    • Fragrant Cardamom
    • Spicy Ginger
    • Black Tea

When making the tea, it’s mixed with milk and sugar to give it the sweet creaminess that balances the spicy.

TAZO has partnered with Padma Lakshmi, New York Times Best Seller and host, to introduce the new TAZO® Chai Latte K-Cup® pods which is made from milk, tea leaves and spices. Padma teaming up on this project was natural since both tea and chai have been part of her life and family heritage. She’s even come up with perfect recipe pairings–these Cinnamon Cookies are right up my alley!

    Ladybugs: The Eco-Friendly Pesticides

Ladybugs are most commonly seen as lucky little beetles but do you know how they got this reputation? Read on to see how and what they're REALLY for.

When most people think of ladybugs, they think of luck. These might be one of the only bugs that when I see it, I don’t immediately begin to feverishly swat at it and secretly pray for it’s imminent death. Nope, none of that happens when I see these little guys.

Ladybugs are most commonly seen as lucky little beetles but do you know how they got this reputation? Read on to see how and what they're REALLY for.

Having little girls, ladybugs are popular with clothes and accessories and I always thought they were these cute, little bugs meant to spread good luck and cheer all over the world. But they aren’t. These little guys have a purpose and a rather awesome one that I learned about during the recent release of ladybugs held at Pike Nurseries.

Ladybugs Are More Than Just Good Luck & Fortune

These babies are killing machines!!! Yes, killing machines as in they will eat those nasty little bugs that are determined to kill your gardens. Its a dog eat dog world, right? Or a ladybug eat nasty bugs world to be more accurate.

Ladybugs are most commonly seen as lucky little beetles but do you know how they got this reputation? Read on to see how and what they're REALLY for.

    Fun Facts About Ladybugs:

    • There are over 4500 different species of ladybugs with 450 in the US–including a pink one that looks more like a beetle.
    • These pink ladybugs look like the beetles because they are beetles! Yep, they are part of the beetle family–not to be confused with Ringo though.
    • These babies are natural enemies (yes, even ladybugs have enemies) of aphids and pesr insects making them a chemical free pesticide.
    • They’re small but have a huge appetite. A ladybug will eat over 5000 aphids in it’s lifetime.
    • They’re the opposite of people when it comes to aging–their spots fade the older they get.
    • Legend has it that they became known as lucky because European farmers in the middle ages would pray to the Virgin Mary when their crops would go bad and swarms of ladybugs would come in and save the day. Amazing, right?

Pike Nurseries: A Wealth of Knowledge

At the event that Pike Nurseries had (which was then followed up by flyers sent home in mini’s backpack) I learned so much. While I don’t have a garden just yet, I do know that they’re the ones that will be able to help me when I’m ready. Did you know that you can take a dying plant to see them and they’ll nurse it back to life? I’ve got a tomato plant sitting here that needs some emergency care, sheesh.

Now if only ladybugs ate weeds. We’d be in business!

3 Things To Do Before Having Your House Cleaned

Having your house cleaned is an awesome treat for a mom. Whether you can afford for it to be done consistently or once in a while, make sure that you follow these 3 tips to make sure you're cleaning professionals are using their time most efficiently. Read more at www.thecrunchymommy.com.

Having your home professionally cleaned is a luxury that everyone needs to treat themselves to at the very least annually. As a mompreneur, the things that I’ve come to love most are massages, time spent alone free to let my mind wonder, and a clean space. When you have children, it seems like you’re destined to have a messy home for at least 5 years straight until your youngest no longer walks around tossing things on the floor as if that’s where they belong. But I personally don’t like to have my life flash before my eyes every time my feet hit the ground shoe-less with the threat of hitting some figurine or Lego.

But in order for you to really be able to have your house cleaned to the best of the professionals ability, there are a couple things you should do first. And yes, I am suggesting pre-cleaning before the cleaning professionals come!

Having your house cleaned is an awesome treat for a mom. Whether you can afford for it to be done consistently or once in a while, make sure that you follow these 3 tips to make sure you're cleaning professionals are using their time most efficiently. Read more at www.thecrunchymommy.com.

    1. Make sure your sink and dishwasher are empty. I learned this the hard way the first time I had someone come in and clean. It sucked because they cost $60/hour and they spent like 45 min with the dishes. That day I could only afford the downstairs cleaned since I wasn’t dishing my life savings out on some dishes.
    2. Put your “things” away. I know, if you’re doing this then what are they coming for? Well here’s the thing, only you know where your lotions/perfumes/glasses/etc. go. They don’t. And if you opt not to do this, then you’ll open up the cabinet that houses the baking wares and find sippy cup tops or you’ll never be able to find all your fabric scissors. It’ll end up taking you more time to find your things than it would have for you to just put them away.
    3. Get a good playlist for when they come. Music while they work? Bananas right? But let’s face it, when it comes to housecleaning we all do better once we have some body rocking jams on. My personal favorite is the 90s Rump Shaker Chore List on Google Music but, well, I’m older ha! Some people might think it’s weird to put the music on for someone coming to do work in your home but I say why not? Mix it up and let them get into their groove.

I was lucky enough to have WellKept come and clean my home from top to bottom recently. After battling with my asthma issues courtesy of allergies, the hubs getting strep throat, abc nursing a little cold, and then my poor mini battling through Hand, Foot and Mouth disease, mama needed some help in getting my home back in order. And boy did they do it!

I’d set an appointment for the late afternoon once abc was up from her nap but they called saying they had availability earlier that worked with my schedule as well. Thirty minutes later, three young professionals arrived at my door ready to tackle the craziness that had become my life. I was so apologetic but they reassured me there was nothing to apologize for and that’s why they were here. I really liked how they worked–divide and conquer. Someone handled the kitchen, another did the bathrooms, and the third (who was running things) did the common areas. They were so professional and pleasant that I didn’t have anything to worry about when I ran out to grab abc from day care.

Four hours later (don’t judge me), they were finished and I thought Cinderella had swooped in with her fairy godmother to whip my home into shape. It smelled so fresh and clean. Mini was running around (not touching anything) exclaiming “Mommy our whole house is cleaned!!!” I loved that when I took a deep breath, I didn’t feel like my lungs were filled with chemicals. The vacuum lines in the carpet smiled at me and my reflection in the clean mirror was extra shiny.

Satisfied is an understatement. From booking the appointment to the wrap up, the experience was one that was user friendly, professional, and convenient. I love that they offer both house packages as well as a la carte options. The pricing is awesome and I really love how they do it by room and not time. For just over $105, you can get a 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom house cleaned. How amazing is that?

The ground hog saw his shadow, the sun has been shining, temperature rising and Spring is ALMOST in the air!!! I’m so excited to finally be able to open up the windows and not fear Elsa’s wrath attacking me!

Honestly speaking, Spring cleaning is NOT my favorite thing though it helps to make way for the Springtime spruce up! While we clean, I’m so big about de-cluttering and getting rid of the things we no longer need and finding things we DO need.

One of my favorite places to shop is uncommongoods. I’m infamous for being an online shopper–you get way better deals, no lines, easier to get distracted–and this store totally caters to everything I love about life and shopping. I love this store for so many reasons but the main one being that they offer really unique pieces that bring life to your space.

    1. Gummy Bear Lights

Look at how cute these are!!! They are as soft as a candy gummy bear but offer some creative lighting for your littles (or for you, no judgement!) and they’re super easy to use! All you do is squeeze it’s belly and the light turns on.

    2. There Are Always Flowers Print

I wouldn’t that I’m an art history buff but I do have a sweet spot in my heart for it since I’m a lover of art. One of Henri Matisse’s famous sayings was “There are always flowers for those who want to see them.” This is a must-have for the wall of any entrepreneur’s office. We’re always going to encounter tough times but there’s always beauty in them as well and I love this reminder and prints are an easy and flexible way to add some flavor to your walls.

    3. Barnwood State Side Tables

I’m a native New Yorker and my hubs is from Rhode Island (I know, they really do have people that are from there! Ha! I kid!). We both love reppin’ our home states and these would be so cute in our little parts of our house. Of course we’d also have to get a Georgia one since this is where we met and fell in love! I love some interesting furniture!

    4. Personalized Tree Throw

Speaking of falling in love, how cute is this throw??!?! It commemorates you and your loved one old school style but you get to see it as often as you like. I love personalized items and anything that reminds me of my husband and I’s love. Mushy? I know but I do love this guy! This one is my favorite option but check out the other ones here.

    5. F Bomb Paper Weight

When I saw this, I fell in love instantly. I MAY or may not (to be read as a definite may) have a small problem with cursing so seeing this F Bomb Paper Weight is like that constant reminder to watch my mouth. Raisins littles you can’t just drop F-bombs like I’m accustomed to, but I’m a work in progress!

    6. Personalized Mixtape Doormat

I already professed my love for personalized items. But this doormat is so cool! Imagine the first impression people would give you walking up to your door seeing this? Awesome, right?

    7. Bedside Smartphone Vase

How cute is this!?! Now this is more of an office thing for me because abc will grab, drop, throw, etc anything within her reach but this is perfect for both the outside and home office that needs some brightening up that the spring flowers can offer WHILE staying abreast of the three million notifications your phone is bound to offer you as well.

    8. Recycled Picnic Mat for Two

Or reading area for one. Either or works just fine! Once it gets warm, I’m one of those people that is a sucker for a picnic, movie under the stars, reading in the sun, and the like. This mat is so beautiful and comfortable to lay on. I don’t know how willing to share it for the picnic but if you’re out and about this spring and summer in Atlanta, you’re bound to see me laid out on it!

    9. Kinetic Gear Key Holder

My husband saw this and loved it! If you or your roommate or spouse is ALWAYS losing their keys, I would totally get this! How can anyone forget to put their keys up when their key holder looks as cool as this one?

    10. Moss Terrarium Bottle

If you’re not into flowers, that’s cool. But you can still add a little green to your space and some more oxygen in the world with this little guy. The creators upcycled an old wine bottle to create the living space for this little flowerless plant. Fun fact about moss: it can absorb liquids up to 20 times it’s weight.

Uncommongoods not only offers unique and quality products, but the company itself is uncommonly good as well.

    Uncommongoods: Uncommonly Good

The name of the company is perfect for the products it offers. Founded in 1999 and headquartered in Brooklyn, NY, uncommongoods is a privately-owned marketplace for creators of awesome things that are unique, handcrafted, and created in harmony with the environment not harming animals or people. Not only are their products people-friendly, but so is the company, which offers it’s lowest paid seasonal employees 50% more than the minimum wage. This is big–especially in NY given the cost of living–because of the current state of the economy and the fact that most people cannot live off of minimum wage. One-third of their products are made from either recycled or upcycled materials.

Uncommongoods not only talks the good talk about being environmentally friendly, but they walk the walk too. They are a founding B corp, offer virtual tours of their lair for transparency, and share uncommon facts on their own blog. As if being eco-conscious isn’t enough, Uncommongoods also has the following NOT-for-profits:

    • RAINN: The Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network runs more than 1,100 rape crisis centers across the United States as the largest anti-sexual violence organization. Additionally, they provide resources for policymakers and media outlets, promote education in our communities, and work to ensure that sex offenders are brought to justice.
    • American Forests: Founded way back in 1875 as the American Forestry Association with a mission to preserve and restore forests worldwide, American Forests is the oldest American conservation organization. Since 1990 they have furthered that mission by planting more than 45 million trees to improve the health of forests and by extension the planet and its inhabitants.
    • Women for Women International: Women for Women International provides survivors of war and other refugee women the tools and resources to move from crisis and poverty to stable self-sufficiency. By creating a safe space to bring women together for learning life, business, and vocational skills, Women for Women International is helping women become independent. Their newly acquired skills not only benefit themselves, but also help build stronger families and communities.
    • Reach Out & Read: Reach Out & Read is a network of thousands of doctors and nurses working to promote early literacy, language skills, and school readiness to young children in all 50 states. Their methods of integrating children’s books into well-child visits and encouraging parents to read to their children help lay a foundation for early educational success. Reach Out & Read is the newest partner and they are thrilled that over 18,000 customers have already donated to this amazing organization.
