How To Handle Kid’s Motion Sickness Without Ruining Your Travels

This post was sponsored by Dramamine® as part of an Influencer Activation for Influence Central.

This summer has been filled with travels for all of us but mini has been traveling with me since she was in utero. When I was pregnant with her, I would drive back and forth from Myrtle Beach to Atlanta monthly. And then after I had her, we were always on the go. Traveling with a baby was second nature to me.

But now as a family of 4, travel is different. We drive most places to alleviate some of the costs of travel and to make it so those monies can be saved for doing fun things while we’re out and about. Full disclosure: I used to hate road trips because of my battle with motion sickness. But it’s under wraps so road tripping hasn’t been a burden at all as long as the girls have their travel bags with them. Abc’s bag is pretty basic since she’s a baby but mini requires more.

How To Handle Kid's Motion Sickness Without Ruining Your Travels

    What’s In Mini’s Traveling Bag

    Books

Mini is an avid reader. I’m lucky that she’s gotten her love via both nature and nurture from the hubs and I. I make sure that she has 2-3 books in her bag that she can either read to herself of share with her sister.

    Headphones

Because while I’m super happy she’s quiet, I don’t really want to hear the sounds.

    Amazon Kindle

We have loaded movies, books and educational games on her Kindle. This will occupy her for HOURS!

    Chargers

Because what’s the point in having these awesome electronics if they die?

    Snacks

My kids are President and Vice President of #TeamEat. If we don’t have snacks then we’ll be accosted with whining and crying and the dramatics that are associated with false starvation.

    Dramamine® for Kids

Because I apparently passed my motion sickness down to my mini and I don’t want her to miss out on fun! It comes in an easy to store travel pack and the flavor tastes good so it’s nothing to give it to her. We give them to her 20 min prior to travel and we’re good as gold!

    Water

Mini and abc will convince a human lie detector that they are dying from dehydration. Since we don’t want any of that, we keep some water in the car—not too much because we don’t want to have all the stops for the potty!

Stopping Motion Sickness Before it Starts

Motion sickness is the worst feeling to me. The acids rolling around in your stomach, the dizziness, the overall yucky feeling are literally the worst. As a survivor (yes, I said survivor) of motion sickness for 30+ years, I’ve learned that the best way to deal with it is through preventing it. I don’t want mini to miss out on the fun (plus she’s super dramatic and that can be overwhelming) we started using Dramamine® for Kids before we hop on the road for long trips—anything over an hour. I also give her drier snacks in her snack pack like crackers or nuts.

Taking road trips with the kids? Learn what to pack to travel with the family like a boss! Don't get caught off guard by anything--even motion sickness.

Did you know that Dramamine® for Kids is the only medicated motion sickness relief product that was made just for kids ages 2-12? Finding out about this product was awesome since she hates the way ginger tastes—unless it’s ginger ale and then she’s really only excited because she can drink soda. But even better is that when we arrive to our destination, there’s no down time for either of us to recover from the trip!

Does your child suffer from motion sickness? How do you handle it?

    P.S.
If you’re interested in giving this a try, I’ve got a coupon for you!

Cruising Thru Atlanta Traffic In the Mazda 6

I honestly never thought that I would have a post with this title. I’ve lived in Atlanta for almost 15 years now and I’ve never seen traffic patterns the way they are here. Atlanta’s traffic is senseless. We’re overcrowded and it shows with how the build up begins so early. In fact, it seems like it’s ALWAYS rush hour!

    I digress…

My summer has been filled with road trips. I’m trying to teach myself to love driving in the car for hours upon hours–desensitizing myself. Abc spent a couple of weeks with my mom and I couldn’t wait to get her back. I hopped in the new 2016 Mazda 6 to go and get her. I left my house at about 1pm thinking this would be the perfect time. I was meeting my mom 3 hours away to pick her up. But then Atlanta traffic hit. Yes, at 1pm I was stuck in traffic.

Instead of being miserable, I was able to actually enjoy the ride. I turned on the cruise control that adjusts your speed automatically based on the distance of the car in front of you. Do you know how much this made my life easy? If you’ve ever lived or driven in Atlanta, then yes, you do know exactly what I mean. I’d packed some snacks so I was ready for whatever was waiting for me traffic wise. Even though it took me 6 hours to go the 3 hours, I arrived safely and happily in the Mazda 6.

Hopping on the road for my day trip in this beautiful @mazdausa 6. Got all the important things: protein shake, water, healthy snacks.

I’ve driven the Mazda 3 and it was beautiful–but a little snug. The Mazda 6 is pretty comparable to the Mazda 3. In fact, my only “con” was the sizing sooooooo naturally that’s not a thing to even worry about right now.

Atlanta traffic can make the strongest person cry but I cruised through happily in the 2016 Mazda 6 as I took a solo road trip. Read on for more deets!

    My Fave Features:

The color was beautiful! I feel like red is a power color and this beauty was a perfect cherry red. I felt like a boss driving it.

The sound system created an oasis in the car. When we drove back, I was able to set up some white noise/rain sounds to make sure that abc slept peacefully. Then once she was down, I put all the sound to the front and enjoyed my audiobook as I finished up the drive.

Cruise-control saved my sanity. Seriously. One of my pet peeves in life is traffic and I was sitting in an absurd amount of it. But because it automatically detects how close the car in front of you is and then adjusts speed it made things sooooo much easier.

Lumbar support made it so my back was comfortable throughout the journey.

The ease of connecting my phone via Bluetooth was awesome. I love this feature and it makes travelling super easy.

I Brought My Baby Back In The Mazda

This was the longest that I had been away from her. I didn’t cry and neither did she but boy did I miss her. As much as I did miss her, I needed the break from motherhood to focus on my marriage and myself without guilt. I’m incredibly grateful to my mom for giving me this time and Mazda for bringing her back!

Look at who I found on my day trip on Friday? ABC’s curls are popping courtesy of the @YouBeNatural hair line. We used the shampoo, edge control cream, curly shaper and curl lotion.

Girls Trip: Three States In One Weekend

This summer is one fun road trip after another and this past weekend I had a much needed girls trip with a good friend of mine. Both moms and wives needing a break, we decided to keep it relatively close to home and head to Chattanooga, TN. It’s about an hour from where I live and there are so many different things to do there.

    We Stayed in an Airbnb

I’m not going to lie, I had little to do with planning this trip. I just knew I needed the getaway and was basically down for whatever she wanted to do too. After doing some research, we decided on a beautiful home in Lafayette, GA. It was a 3-bedroom home so we decided to invite another friend along with us. It was my first time meeting her but you wouldn’t know by the easy chemistry we all had.

The Need For A Girls Trip

Despite the hesitancy that we all felt at leaving our loved ones to actually take a weekend for us, it was so needed and that became evident immediately. There’s nothing like being surrounded by women who are in a similar spot in life as you to just let your hair down around. We talked about everything from parenting to marriage to the need to be ourselves in the midst of our roles. And then we had fun.

    Sunset Cruise In Chattanooga

The first thing that we did was take a beautiful riverboat ride around Chattanooga. Beautiful is an understatement. I normally get motion sick but felt none of that as we enjoyed the beautiful views.

It was soooooo good and I was even able to stay within the confines of my DTOX program without feeling like I was missing out on the fun! I had an Asian burger with lettuce “buns” and a side of collard greens. Now I’m pretty picky about my greens but these? My goodness. We had to call the manager over to get the recipe–which I’ve forgotten. What happens when 3 ladies take time for themselves? Fun In Little River Canyon

I’ve lived in the South for 15 years and there are a lot of states that I haven’t been to down here–Alabama being one of them. We got up not so early the next morning and headed out to the Canyon. I sported some shorts that I made just for the occasion since I knew we would be swimming. After hiking over to the waterfall area in the insane heat, we were rewarded with water that was of the perfect temperature.

Apparently everyone was relaxing this weekend and it was great to see so many people out just experiencing the beauty of nature. We met up with some really cool women that lived in Alabama and were in the canyons for a family reunion. We floated around the water for hours before finally realizing that we needed to get back to our Airbnb.

    #Momlife Forever

We were all ready to tackle another night out on the town before our bodies realized that we were really just moms and there was no need to fight our nature so we Netflixed and chilled. We binge watched “Grace and Frankie” while laughing about who knows what. It was incredible. And relaxing.

    Stranded in South Carolina

    Thump… fwap… fwap… fwap… fwap…

This is how it sounded when our tire busted as we were on the road to Atlanta from South Carolina. The hubs looked at me and asked, “Is that our car?” I almost rolled my eyes because I knew that he knew it was our car so he didn’t really need confirmation. “Yep. That would be a flat tire.” It was Sunday at 5:15pm and we were driving through rural South Carolina. What were the chances that we would find a tire shop today.

    None.

None was the answer. The hubs changed into the spare tire in 5 minutes flat. I’m blessed–I married a man that knows how to work with his hands. In my eyes, there’s nothing that he can’t fix–even if it’s with the help of YouTube University. We hopped back on the road and I called every tire shop within a 20 mile radius and got 1 answer from Sam’s Club. Apparently we talked to the wrong people because as we pulled up at exactly closing time, they informed us they couldn’t help us.

    Stranded in South Carolina

While the people at Sam’s Club tried to help us find an open tire shop, I realized it was futile. It was Sunday and all places that might have been opened where now closed. I felt bad–the hubs was supposed to have his long awaited review on Monday at work and we wouldn’t be able to make it back in time. Sure, there was work I would be missing too but not like his–I’m a writer and social media manager so if there’s internet, I can work.

Defeated, we hopped back in the car and searched for local hotels. All I can say is that I’m so happy that this didn’t happen in April when we were broker than some jokers. We aren’t balling out of control but we could afford a modestly priced overnight hotel stay. We called one hotel and tried not to act surprised over the phone. Calling around wasn’t going to work for us so we did the next best thing–www.tripadvisor.com.

    TripAdvisor.com

I didn’t really want to book a hotel through one of the websites that you have to sign up for. I was on a phone and didn’t have the patience for all that. But TripAdvisor.com really made it easy. I searched the are we were in, sorted by price and checked out the ratings. We decided on The Sleep Inn and booked with ease through Booking.com. It took maybe 5min in total, which was a relief and we weren’t breaking bank to get a last minute room.

After catching a flat tire on a Sunday evening in South Carolina, my husband and I were stranded. But our stay there turned out to be quite pleasant.

    Sleep Inn Saved My Sanity

I’m not going to lie, I was slightly frazzled when the tire situation happened and not because I thought our safety was jeopardized. In fact, it wasn’t until I talked to my mom that I realized that we could have been seriously injured. Now, I wouldn’t say I’m a control freak but I will say that I like to have a plan and being stranded in South Carolina was NOT in the plan. But Sleep Inn was a good price, rated well, and when we checked in, it was easy to see that the ratings didn’t lie.

Check in was easy and took 2 minutes literally. The woman who checked us in pronounced my name correctly and gave us directions on how to get to our room fastest. We got there and I was more than pleasantly surprised by our room. It had a nice, king-size bed with a flat screen TV that had cable. The WiFi was free and worked really well due to the signal boosters placed throughout the hallways. Our shower was pretty awesome and was huge.

Instead of being frazzled and worried, I was able to relax and really enjoy the first night being child-free for a bit with my husband. There was no shrieks of “mommy”, no fighting, no mess. There was only peace, quiet, and the love of my life. We ate in and enjoyed watching Game of Thrones in real time. We slept moderately late and then had a hot breakfast. This was one of the defining factors for me in choosing where we would stay–breakfast. Since I knew I wouldn’t be starting my DTOX program today, I knew I wanted something free and moderately delicious. I was able to make some banana waffles and have a yogurt along with some juice and coffee. Works for me!

Sure, being stranded in South Carolina wasn’t part of the plan but Sleep Inn made it a pleasant unscheduled stop on our road to vacation.
