10 Practical Tips To Achieve Fitness Goals Now

Keeping your fitness goals can be difficult if you've had some hiccups along the way. Here are 10 tips to getting back and staying on track with them.

Every year the masses set these really awesome and pretty realistic fitness goals that include losing weight or changing their lifestyle to one that’s more healthy than what they have now. And then the middle of the year comes and the gyms aren’t as busy or you just aren’t as motivated. It happens to most of us–myself included. The middle of the year is literally around the corner and it’s a perfect time to reassess where you are now and where you want to be so that you can develop a plan to bridge that gap.

fitKeeping your fitness goals can be difficult if you've had some hiccups along the way. Here are 10 tips to getting back and staying on track with them.

10 Tips to Keeping Your Fitness Goals

    1. Schedule out a week of workouts on Sunday

Make sure that you decide whether you’re working out in the morning, midday, evening and check the weather. All these will determine what workout gear you’ll need.

    2. Pick out your clothes the night before

If you’re working out in the morning, put your clothes on the nightstand or in the bathroom so that’s one less thing you have to do when you wake up. If you’re not stopping home prior to your sparkle session, make sure everything you need is packed in your gym bag and you put it in the car.

    3. Meal plan and grocery shop

This is huge. I know I’m no the only one thinking of my next meal–especially when I workout consistently. Keep those healthy snacks readily accessible so you don’t grab something that will derail you.

    4. Plan out your water intake

It’s ok to have preferences. Do you like drinking from the huge gallon jug? Are straws your thing? Ice water? Doesn’t matter. Make sure that you know how you like to get your water in and plan for it.

    5. Plan your workouts

One of my favorite things about Life Time is that they have apps for this. If you want to stay home and workout, you can follow one of their videos. If you want to take a class, it syncs with your calendar. And it helps you track your workouts completed too so you know which muscles need some time to relax.

Keeping your fitness goals can be difficult if you've had some hiccups along the way. Here are 10 tips to getting back and staying on track with them.

    6. Have a workout buddy

Whether this person goes to the gym with you or not, have someone that you share your workouts with that’s going to hold you accountable to them and your goals.

    7. Plan to relax

Yes, that’s right. Relax. Rest. This time is crucial for muscle recovery and development. So often we hear about everyone in “Beast Mode”. Well, if you don’t relax and repair those muscles won’t be ready for the zombie apocalypse. My favorite way to recover is in the sauna and steam room. At Life Time, our steam room smells like eucalyptus and when you leave, you feel like you’ve had spa treatment!

    8. Mix it up

Are you training for a marathon? Snag a spin class or go for a swim. Training for a fitness competition? Get some yoga in there. People get burnt out when things aren’t fun or interesting. Be sure to have more than 2 things you do!

    9. Join a group

One of my favorite tools is my FitBit. The app has great competitions which has really helped me up my activity level and they have a couple of different apps that you can earn money by hitting your steps goals too!

    10. Get help when needed

Not losing weight like you want to? Arms still not strong? Ask for help. I’m an ex-jock and having 2 babies has really made my body crazy. When I wasn’t losing weight, I got help from my personal trainer Cedric who told me about the assessments that Life Time offers. I learned a lot about the relationship of heart rate and weight loss that has helped me drop some poundage! But don’t get discouraged–get help!

    60-Day Challenge Update

    The Good… The Bad… The Ugly…

Ok, so I haven’t weighed-in yet. Womp. Womp. I know. But I’m finishing up the DTOX program and here’s what I have to say about it: It works. So I shared on Facebook  when I drank my first shake which was pretty gross. I think chia seeds made for a yucky taste. The day I started the DTOX my body went through a shock. Like I was in the bed and couldn’t move or anything. I felt horrible! But since then, I’ve had waaaaaay more energy and have stopped making the shakes with the chia seeds lol.

My consistency at the gym isn’t where I would like it to be though last week I did work out 5 days which I was pretty stoked about though I didn’t hit 10k steps on any of those days which tells me that though it’s great I’m working out, I need to be more active period.

    Week 3

This begins the third week of the challenge. While it’s too late to join me in it, I’ll still be sharing what’s going on with it! We’re focusing on cardio and how to burn fat–just what I need! So naturally my focus is on getting some more cardio training in. Check out the recipes of the week and great workouts too.

Girls Trip: Three States In One Weekend

What happens when 3 ladies take time for themselves? A super fun girls trip where we hit up not 1, not 2, but THREE states in one weekend!

This summer is one fun road trip after another and this past weekend I had a much needed girls trip with a good friend of mine. Both moms and wives needing a break, we decided to keep it relatively close to home and head to Chattanooga, TN. It’s about an hour from where I live and there are so many different things to do there.

    We Stayed in an Airbnb

I’m not going to lie, I had little to do with planning this trip. I just knew I needed the getaway and was basically down for whatever she wanted to do too. After doing some research, we decided on a beautiful home in Lafayette, GA. It was a 3-bedroom home so we decided to invite another friend along with us. It was my first time meeting her but you wouldn’t know by the easy chemistry we all had.

The Need For A Girls Trip

Despite the hesitancy that we all felt at leaving our loved ones to actually take a weekend for us, it was so needed and that became evident immediately. There’s nothing like being surrounded by women who are in a similar spot in life as you to just let your hair down around. We talked about everything from parenting to marriage to the need to be ourselves in the midst of our roles. And then we had fun.

    Sunset Cruise In Chattanooga

The first thing that we did was take a beautiful riverboat ride around Chattanooga. Beautiful is an understatement. I normally get motion sick but felt none of that as we enjoyed the beautiful views.

It was soooooo good and I was even able to stay within the confines of my DTOX program without feeling like I was missing out on the fun! I had an Asian burger with lettuce “buns” and a side of collard greens. Now I’m pretty picky about my greens but these? My goodness. We had to call the manager over to get the recipe–which I’ve forgotten. What happens when 3 ladies take time for themselves? Fun In Little River Canyon

I’ve lived in the South for 15 years and there are a lot of states that I haven’t been to down here–Alabama being one of them. We got up not so early the next morning and headed out to the Canyon. I sported some shorts that I made just for the occasion since I knew we would be swimming. After hiking over to the waterfall area in the insane heat, we were rewarded with water that was of the perfect temperature.

Apparently everyone was relaxing this weekend and it was great to see so many people out just experiencing the beauty of nature. We met up with some really cool women that lived in Alabama and were in the canyons for a family reunion. We floated around the water for hours before finally realizing that we needed to get back to our Airbnb.

    #Momlife Forever

We were all ready to tackle another night out on the town before our bodies realized that we were really just moms and there was no need to fight our nature so we Netflixed and chilled. We binge watched “Grace and Frankie” while laughing about who knows what. It was incredible. And relaxing.

    Paris In Atlanta

I made mini a peasant-style tunic out of a Paris-inspired cotton that she loved. We paired it with the perfect combination giving her grace and style!

I took mini shopping with me during one of my many fabric excursions and I let her pick out some fabric. This is one of the fabrics that she chose–a Paris themed fabric. As she touched the soft cotton on the bolt, I saw so much of me in her. You can tell that she really appreciates the beauty of the fabric. While she stood there playing with the fabric I asked her what she thought she would want made out of this. “A shirt Mommy. I think a shirt would be so nice.” In my head she meant like a regular t-shirt but this isn’t a stretch cotton for that kind of style. Mini is a beautiful combination of tom-boy and girly girl so I wanted to make her something that would allow her to just be her. When I finished this peasant-style tunic for her she was so excited! Pairing it with some white jeans (which will probably NOT stay white ha!) and sandals makes for a perfect summer outfit.

I married the greatest husband in the world who also happens to be one of the best father's in the world. He'll be getting a gift from this guide!

Growing up, I had the greatest dad. In the moment, I don’t know if I appreciated him the way that I do now that I see the things I love so much about how he fathered me in how my husband loves our kids. I wouldn’t say that when I started dating after mini I was looking for a good dad but I would be remiss if I said that this wasn’t a requirement. I found the most amazing friend, husband, and father in him.

I married the greatest husband in the world who also happens to be one of the best father's in the world. He'll be getting a gift from this guide!

    Celebrating Father’s Every Day

I try not to wait until Father’s Day to show my husband how much I appreciate him being a great dad. He’s truly wonderful. He’s this amazingly compassionate and patient man. His girls love him and this is evident everyday with the squeals and screams of delight as he comes through the door. My husband has made it possible for me to chase my dreams while providing for our girls day in and day out.

He does more than the average husband–he cleans daily without nagging, comes in and immediately gives attention to the girls before putting them to bed and gets them dressed in the morning. He does these things happily and with joy in his heart which is why he deserves the world and more.

    Stranded in South Carolina

After catching a flat tire on a Sunday evening in South Carolina, my husband and I were stranded. But our stay there turned out to be quite pleasant.

    Thump… fwap… fwap… fwap… fwap…

This is how it sounded when our tire busted as we were on the road to Atlanta from South Carolina. The hubs looked at me and asked, “Is that our car?” I almost rolled my eyes because I knew that he knew it was our car so he didn’t really need confirmation. “Yep. That would be a flat tire.” It was Sunday at 5:15pm and we were driving through rural South Carolina. What were the chances that we would find a tire shop today.

    None.

None was the answer. The hubs changed into the spare tire in 5 minutes flat. I’m blessed–I married a man that knows how to work with his hands. In my eyes, there’s nothing that he can’t fix–even if it’s with the help of YouTube University. We hopped back on the road and I called every tire shop within a 20 mile radius and got 1 answer from Sam’s Club. Apparently we talked to the wrong people because as we pulled up at exactly closing time, they informed us they couldn’t help us.

    Stranded in South Carolina

While the people at Sam’s Club tried to help us find an open tire shop, I realized it was futile. It was Sunday and all places that might have been opened where now closed. I felt bad–the hubs was supposed to have his long awaited review on Monday at work and we wouldn’t be able to make it back in time. Sure, there was work I would be missing too but not like his–I’m a writer and social media manager so if there’s internet, I can work.

Defeated, we hopped back in the car and searched for local hotels. All I can say is that I’m so happy that this didn’t happen in April when we were broker than some jokers. We aren’t balling out of control but we could afford a modestly priced overnight hotel stay. We called one hotel and tried not to act surprised over the phone. Calling around wasn’t going to work for us so we did the next best thing–www.tripadvisor.com.

    TripAdvisor.com

I didn’t really want to book a hotel through one of the websites that you have to sign up for. I was on a phone and didn’t have the patience for all that. But TripAdvisor.com really made it easy. I searched the are we were in, sorted by price and checked out the ratings. We decided on The Sleep Inn and booked with ease through Booking.com. It took maybe 5min in total, which was a relief and we weren’t breaking bank to get a last minute room.

    Sleep Inn Saved My Sanity

I’m not going to lie, I was slightly frazzled when the tire situation happened and not because I thought our safety was jeopardized. In fact, it wasn’t until I talked to my mom that I realized that we could have been seriously injured. Now, I wouldn’t say I’m a control freak but I will say that I like to have a plan and being stranded in South Carolina was NOT in the plan. But Sleep Inn was a good price, rated well, and when we checked in, it was easy to see that the ratings didn’t lie.

Check in was easy and took 2 minutes literally. The woman who checked us in pronounced my name correctly and gave us directions on how to get to our room fastest. We got there and I was more than pleasantly surprised by our room. It had a nice, king-size bed with a flat screen TV that had cable. The WiFi was free and worked really well due to the signal boosters placed throughout the hallways. Our shower was pretty awesome and was huge.

Instead of being frazzled and worried, I was able to relax and really enjoy the first night being child-free for a bit with my husband. There was no shrieks of “mommy”, no fighting, no mess. There was only peace, quiet, and the love of my life. We ate in and enjoyed watching Game of Thrones in real time. We slept moderately late and then had a hot breakfast. This was one of the defining factors for me in choosing where we would stay–breakfast. Since I knew I wouldn’t be starting my DTOX program today, I knew I wanted something free and moderately delicious. I was able to make some banana waffles and have a yogurt along with some juice and coffee. Works for me!

Sure, being stranded in South Carolina wasn’t part of the plan but Sleep Inn made it a pleasant unscheduled stop on our road to vacation.
